New studies show that menstrual products such as tampons and sanitary towels – and in some cases period underwear too – may contain chemicals such as PFAS (‘forever chemicals’), pesticides, plasticisers or heavy metals – all substances linked to health risks. This raises important questions: what does this mean for our long-term health? Who is particularly affected? And why are there still no stricter regulations in place?
We discussed this in an online seminar on 28 April 2026. Together, we at WECF, in collaboration with Wen (Women’s Environmental Network), brought together experts from research and practice to contextualise the latest findings and discuss solutions.
The panellists were Dr Kathrin Schilling (Columbia University), Tripti Arora (ToxicsLink/IPEN) and Justine Okolodkoff (Règles Élémentaires). Moderator: Simona Zimmermann (WECF)
